This document highlights the importance of comprehensive, empathetic and specialized care to guarantee the emotional well-being of women in this vital stage.
One in five women experience some kind of perinatal mental health disorder, such as depression, anxiety or post-traumatic stress. However, these problems often go unnoticed or are minimized, which can negatively affect both the mother and the bond with the baby.
The mothers’ needs collected by the Unit’s professionals highlight the following aspects:
- Access to professionals trained in perinatal mental health. Who understand the specific characteristics of this stage.
- Territorial equity for the services. Guaranteeing that all women can receive specialized care close to home.
- Active participation of mothers in therapeutic decisions. Respecting their values and preferences.
- Clear communication that is easy to understand. By the health professionals.
- Validation of the mothers' emotions. Avoiding judgements or phrases that minimize their discomfort.
- Respectful support throughout the process. Recognizing that emotional recovery requires time.
- Promotion of support networks. That avoid isolation and encourage connection between mothers.
These demands are in line with the global campaign entitled “Healthy beginnings, hopeful futures” promoted by the World Health Organization, which is focusing on maternal and newborn health this year.
The Clínic’s Perinatal Mental Health Unit, led by Dr Alba Roca, has treated 800 women over the last year, offering multidisciplinary care integrating psychiatry, psychology and social work.
With the publication of these needs of patients treated at the Unit, the Clínic reaffirms its commitment to the mental health of mothers, highlighting the fact that looking after them is essential for the well-being of society as a whole. The Unit treats any mental health problem that appears during pregnancy or that already existed before, both at the outpatient clinic and in the hospital itself. Although it is particularly closely linked to psychiatry and psychology, it works in coordination with other specialities such as obstetrics and neonatology.
